Penang, the 2nd biggest city in Malaysia is home to the popular Penang Bridge International Marathon (PBIM). The run is organized by Penang State Tourism Development office and fully supported by the Penang State Government. The Penang Bridge International Marathon (PBIM) has been an anticipated run in Malaysia since its inception in 1986. The run is held annually on the Penang Bridge, the iconic bridge that connects Penang Island to Penang Mainland. PBIM is the largest mass-participation sporting event in Penang, bringing tens of thousands of runners out onto the streets.

In 2014, ASICS Penang Bridge International Marathon (APBIM) has successfully attracted 60,000 runners from local and overseas which was the largest crowd of all-time as it was held for the first time ever on the Longest Bridge in South East Asia with 24km-long, known as Sultan Abdul Halim Muad'zam Shah Bridge which is also called the second Penang Bridge.

Penang Bridge Run was organized twice in 2015, once in June and another time in November. Inaugural Penang Bridge Half Marathon (PBHM) was held on 14 June 2015 on the second Penang Bridge in conjunction with the first ever AIMS Asia-Pacific Conference, which was held on 12-13 June 2015. The conference attracted over 100 participants comprises of race directors, running events organizers, government agencies, members of the media and students from all over Asia-Pacific.

On the other hand, the annual ASICS Penang Bridge International Marathon (APBIM) was held on 22 November on the iconic Penang Bridge. Prior marathon, various modules of Running Clinics were conducted to maintain runner's enthusiasm and also to prepare them for the run. In addition to that, a Medical Forum was also organized to minimize the risk of injuries during the long distance run and prevent unnecessary accident from happening. Experience dietician, physiotherapist and a medical doctor was invited to speak during the forum in order to guide runners on the Do's and Don'ts.

On the race day, a few choreographed energetic dances were performed at the starting line and followed by a display of fireworks to boost the runners’ spirit before the race start. Then, gun-off for Full Marathon (42.195km) was done by the Chief Minister of Penang, The Right Honorable Mr Lim Guan Eng accompanied by Chairman of Penang Bridge International Marathon Committee, YB Danny Law Heng Kiang and other delegates.

The run was held in mid morning to ensure that traffic flow during the day will not affect the bridge. Moreover, temperatures during the day can reach over 30 Degree Celcius, a dangerous temperature for distance running. Fortunately, the sea breeze provides a comfortable temperature for the runners on the bridge.

The organizer relies heavily on partnership between government agencies to ensure the safety and comfort of runners. The Royal Malaysian Police Force, medical officers of Penang Hospital, Red Crescent, St John Ambulance and other agencies were all stationed along the entire running route to ensure that runners in distress can receive prompt medical assistance. Numerous water stations were set up along the bridge, including Prayer Rooms for Muslims.

Trophies, finisher medals and certificates are given out to those who have accomplished the race in their best time. PBIM is also popular for its fun, carnival-like atmosphere, showcasing the colors, sights and taste of Penang. Overall, APBIM 2015 was a resounding success.

We look forward to have the runners back in ASICS Penang Bridge International Marathon this coming 27 November 2016. This renowned event is organized by the Penang State Tourism Development Committee.
